Wisdom Revisited with Debbie Henne

What happens when the calling you've carried for years begins taking a shape you never imagined? Dealing with a curveball like that requires some solid wisdom.

When Debbie Henne first joined The Main Thing Podcast in October 2022, she shared a piece of wisdom that resonated with our listeners. Nearly four years later, she's back, and life has taken some fascinating turns.

Debbie is an author, songwriter, podcaster and Christian minister. She's also a woman whose understanding of her own calling has been challenged in unexpected ways. One of the biggest surprises? A new ministry that's taking her into virtual worlds, where people gather, build friendships and sometimes spend more time than they do in the physical world.

In this special Wisdom Revisited conversation, Skip and Debbie explore creativity, faith, fear, and what happens when the future asks us to reconsider who we thought we were meant to become.

And, of course, they'll revisit the wisdom Debbie shared four years ago. Has it stood the test of time? Or has experience given her something new to carry forward?

Why This Episode Matters

Sometimes the hardest part of a new chapter isn't learning something new. It's letting go of the picture we've carried of how our lives were supposed to unfold.

Debbie had a clear sense of her calling from childhood. She imagined a future that would take her from church to church, sharing her faith through teaching, writing and music. Instead, she's now helping build a faith community in digital spaces, connecting with people who might never enter a traditional church.

Her experience raises a question worth considering, whatever our beliefs or stage of life: What if the next meaningful chapter requires us to rethink the role we've imagined for ourselves?

This conversation offers a fresh perspective on change, identity, courage and the possibility of discovering purpose in unexpected places.

A Memorable Wisdom Quote

[00:00]

Debbie Henne, what's the main thing you've learned in your lifetime so far?

Debbie Henne

[00:05]

Skip, the main thing I've learned so far in my lifetime is to pursue the positive. I spent a lot of my time in my life trying to avoid a negative. Like, don't, you know, lash out when you're stressed out or overwhelmed. You know, don't talk to fear and let fear drive your decisions. But I learned that there's greater strength and greater power in instead of avoiding the negative, pursuing the positive.

Skip Lineberg

[00:35]

That was the main thing. Timeless wisdom shared by our wise guest Debbie Henne here on the main thing podcast in October 2022. It resonated with us pretty deeply. You spoke up and you said, hey, Skip. We want more from these wise thought leaders. Well, I heard you loud and clear, and so we're reconnecting with a few of our most popular guests from past seasons. We'll revisit those guests and revisit their wisdom, their main thing. What will we find? Has it remained the primary driving force in their life, or has something new taken that place of prominence in their heart and mind?

Here in this special episode of Wisdom Revisited, we'll find out how this prior guest has applied and perhaps evolved her wisdom. But first, a bit of background on Debbie Henne. Much has changed since she joined us four years ago. Her kids have grown, and a daughter is now away at college. Debbie's written her second book. She's recorded some vocals, published a 100 more episodes of her podcast, and she's launched a very unique, very clever new ministry project aimed at meeting people in digital places. That's a lot. We'll ask her how in the world she fits it all in, plus we'll revisit her main thing wisdom.

All of that and more in just a moment when we're joined by one of the most gifted, dynamic, and creative human beings I've ever known, Debbie Henne, who's a speech therapist, a prophetic minister, a wife and mother who comes to us from her podcast studio in Reading, Pennsylvania. Now here's wisdom revisited with Debbie Henne. Enjoy. Debbie Henne, good morning, and welcome back to the main thing podcast.

Debbie Henne

[02:34]

Thank you so much for having me back, Skip. It truly is an honor. I'm excited for what we're gonna do today.

Skip Lineberg

[02:40]

Yeah. We're gonna revisit your wisdom, and we're gonna catch up a bit. So, I'm I'm so excited. Debbie, you were on in October 2022. So almost four years ago, where did those four years go like that?

Debbie Henne

[02:54]

I have no idea where they went.

Skip Lineberg

[02:57]

But, you know, a lot's changed in both our lives since then. Kids have grown. I think you've got one going off to college soon. I've got one out of college now. Many more podcast episodes published for each of us. And let's see. You've also released some vocals. I wanna talk about that in a minute. And we talked about your first book, when you were on in October 2022, and I understand you've got another one coming. We'll talk about that, where that is, and and, what it's about. But, my gosh. That's a lot.

Debbie Henne

[03:28]

It is, and I'm excited to to share the journey that god has taken me on.

Skip Lineberg

[03:33]

Yeah. It's always great to be around you. I admire your faith, and it's contagious, and it just sharpens me. You know, like iron sharpens iron when, when you share from your heart and you share what, what the Lord's doing in your life. It's so encouraging to me, and it's it's inspiring.

Debbie Henne

[03:48]

Thank you. That... That's a real blessing to hear. Thank you. All glory to God because I could not do it without God for sure.

Skip Lineberg

[03:55]

Absolutely. Absolutely. I wanna just kinda refresh who you are and all that you are for our listeners who may not have gotten your bio in October 2022 when you were first on. They've heard a little bit about it in the intro, but I just wanna characterize you that you are a writer. You're a podcaster. You have your own podcast. You're you're a vocalist, a singer. I believe you play piano. You play keyboard, and you also do ministry. And so, I mean, to me, that's like... You're so gifted in so many areas, and you're a creative powerhouse. Where does that come from in terms of, Debbie, do you have, like, you know, parents or family members that are also gifted in in some of those areas?

Debbie Henne

[04:46]

Well, I would say number one, it... The source is God. I mean, God is creator. He is a creative God. And many of the things I do are really birthed out of my relationship with God and out of my time with God. I'll spend time worshiping him, and then all of a sudden, my own song comes out, and I write it down. Or, deep in prayer, in the presence of God, and then these words just start bubbling up. And that's really the source. I think he has wired us to be creative. I think we can tap into it in many different areas. Sometimes people say, oh, I'm such a math or a science person.

I'm not really a creative. I'm logic. But I would challenge you and say, there's innovation in math, and there's innovation in science. And if you really lean into your field, into your relationship with God, you might find a lot of creativity and innovation there.

Skip Lineberg

[05:39]

How do you fit it all in, buddy?

Debbie Henne

[05:40]

I get that a lot. Sometimes, I don't know. I get up early, and I go late. I find that if you have a lot of time to do a little bit of things, you'll get a little bit of things done. But if you have a lot of things to do in a little bit of time, you get a lot of things done. So it's about, like, not delaying, not procrastinating, saying, oh, you know what? That'll just take me, like, five minutes. I'll get it done right now. Boom. It's done. Checked off onto the next. And if I can stay in, like, that productive flow, I can maintain a high level of productivity.

I mean, as a mom, inviting my kids in the journey with me. And we'll get into some of that when we talk about the book projects. But, including my kids in my faith walk as I actively pursue God means that I'm not taking that time away from them. I'm inviting them in the journey, and and we can partner together as a family in what God is doing.

Skip Lineberg

[06:39]

That's a creative solution to making time for your creative pursuits. Debbie, I would ask you this if you had to pick, and then this may be an unfair question, but which creative outlet is your favorite lately?

Debbie Henne

[06:52]

It goes in seasons. It goes in, ebbs and flows in different areas. I've come to say, god, what do you want me to do right now? Mhmm. Because that's where his holy spirit is. That's where the flow is gonna be. If I try to decide, oh, I'm gonna write a song right now because that is my personal favorite. It doesn't work.

Skip Lineberg

[07:13]

Okay.

Debbie Henne

[07:13]

I can't just sit down, like, yep. I'm gonna write a song today, and it's gonna come out. It will not. I promise you. And I would just get frustrated, and I'll lose time, basically. So what I do is like, hey, god. What are we doing today? What are we doing right now? And then leaning into that, and it just flows, and it comes easily.

Skip Lineberg

[07:33]

Yeah.

Debbie Henne

[07:34]

And so right now, we're writing. I'm writing with... I say we because I'm doing it with my daughter. But I'm in a writing... In the middle of a writing project and wrapping that up. So that's kind of where the creative flow has been, as well as building out the discipleship community. That is kind of another outlet of the creative flow that God has been leading me into more recently. But I do hope to get back to the songwriting because for me personally, that's my personal favorite.

Skip Lineberg

[08:03]

You're a prophetic minister. You receive prophetic messages, and I've asked you questions you've shared with me. But for someone who hasn't met you yet, would you just explain to them a little bit about what the gift of prophecy is and how that goes?

Debbie Henne

[08:19]

Absolutely. So the gift of prophecy is available to all believers. It's pretty clear in scripture. We can all hear God. And prophetic... And operating the prophetic is really just conveying the heart of God to somebody else. So hearing God's heart for somebody and sharing it with somebody else and being that, like, intermediary connect point to connect people, the heart of a person to the heart of God. That's really what it is. Now the difference between everybody can receive messages from God and everybody can hear God and a prophet and a prophetic minister, there's there's a little bit of a difference there because we can all hear from God, but we're all not called to be prophets.

That is a specific appointment and gifting given by Jesus for the church. So a prophet would be somebody who's been trained, who has submitted to training, and, and has been... Has developed a track record of, I would say, character and accuracy. They always always talk about accuracy, but I'm gonna throw a character in there. I think it's super important. And, really, the office of a prophet, there's, a heavier weight and authority that's carried with that, with the words that they receive. And, really, the purpose is to build the church. So if you are appointed to a church and you're a prophet of that that church, that's your your house prophet, and you're called to come alongside the rest of the leadership in the church, alongside together with, to build that church.

What's the direction of that church? What's the assignment of that church? What are some of the spiritual warfare dynamics going on in the church? And and partnering with the other leadership, sometimes I think prophets feel very misunderstood. And so they tend to wanna go rogue and go on their own and separate themselves from the rest of the leadership. But, really, the prophet is one out of five gifts that Jesus has given to the church, and all five need to work together in order to see the work of Jesus done on this earth, which again is not platform building.

It doesn't mean that God doesn't raise up voices because God a 100% does. We see that in Samuel. We see that in David in the Bible. You know, we see this in Paul's life. God does raise up ministers and and voices, but I would say look for the fruit. They... You should see somebody laboring to lift up, edify, and build up others, whether it's people or whether it's systems, they should really be focusing on building up, edifying, encouraging. So look at the fruit is what I would say.

Skip Lineberg

[11:11]

When did you know that you had this gift?

Debbie Henne

[11:15]

I grew up in a family and in a church that believed in prophecy, that believed in a prophetic gift. So I always thought it was just normal. Everybody just heard God, like, all the time. And then I got to college, and people were like, wow. You hear from God, like, a lot. And I was like, well, who doesn't? So I never really embraced the prophetic in my life until it got to a point where I was actually getting ready to publish the book. And the book wasn't out yet. I was kinda still in the process of writing and editing, which was a very long process, which we talked about in the last show, I think.

Yeah. But in that season, god said, if you're really going to accomplish what I have for you, you're going to have to embrace the prophetic side of the giftings that I've given you. And I went, and I was like, god. Don't wanna I be a don't wanna be a prophet. And, but he said, well, you're gonna have to if you wanna do what I asked you... What I have for you to do. So I said, okay. But I would say, there were two very poignant things, that really went to me embracing being a prophet and growing in the prophetic. And one was during that season where he said, you're gonna have to embrace the prophetic side of you.

And I went to sleep right right around the time I got that message in my heart and had a dream about massive flooding in Bangkok. And he said, you need to have a way to record this and date it because it'll be assigned to you and others that I called you to be a prophet. And so I made, like, a Facebook post about it. Right? And just say, hey. I had this dream last night. And, years later, when God, you know, brought this back, he said, look up. Look that up. And so I looked it up, and it was only a few months after I received that dream that all these things happened that brought that to pass.

So it was, like, a sign in the natural that he had given me ahead of time. And I knew nothing about Thailand. I knew nothing about Bangkok, nothing about the geography. I mean, so there was no no natural knowledge I woulda had that

Skip Lineberg

[13:27]

You weren't thinking about it.

Debbie Henne

[13:28]

Wasn't thinking about it. Hadn't heard anything on the news. It was just a random, quote, unquote, random dream. Right? So there's no way I coulda had natural knowledge or any inclination to be able to have my brain come up with this on its own. And then the other thing, and this was in a season of life where the book was getting published, and God, like, he visited me every night in these powerful ways where, like, my whole body, like, couldn't even contain the presence of God. Like, it was like this rapid acceleration of growth in the spiritual realm.

But in that season, there was one afternoon in particular. I was sitting on the couch in my, family room, and I was just spending time with God. And all of a sudden, I saw what looked like this gold bar. It It was, like, glistening, and it was gold. And God said, eat it. And I was like, what? Okay. And so I I ate this bar, and I actually felt what I saw. I felt it in my mouth. I felt it running down my throat and going into my stomach. It was, like, warm and runny. And I... It was like... It melted in my mouth like a fine chocolate kind of thing.

And I was like, what? And things were never the same after that. Like, the prophetic gifting just supercharged, took off, and I was... That that in particular was a turning point in the prophetic.

Skip Lineberg

[14:54]

Wow. Have you done any research to see what that gold bar might have been or represented of other people seen or experienced it?

Debbie Henne

[15:01]

There are, you know, examples in the Bible of being told to eat a scroll. It's kind of what I was going to. You know, I was like, okay. Like, this is... This wasn't on my grid. Like, again, not on the grid of what I was expecting.

Skip Lineberg

[15:16]

Amazing. Wow. Hey, guys. I've loved JQ Dickinson Salt since they first brought their product to market many years ago. In fact, I refer to myself as their unofficial product evangelist, and I've been doing that for a long time way before they ever teamed

I've loved JQ Dickinson Salt since they first brought their heirloom salt to market. In fact, I was their unofficial product evangelist long before they teamed up with us here at The Main Thing Podcast.

What's amazing is that their salt comes from an ancient ocean deep beneath West Virginia's Kanawha Valley. Once the brine is extracted, the salt is then harvested by hand. I love that. I buy j q Dickinson salt by the sack full. The jars aren't big enough for me. There's a wooden bin that sits right beside my stove that holds their wonderful salt. It never sees the cabinet, never gets put away. I sprinkle it on grilled meats, pizza, eggs, even caprese salad. I rarely even use ordinary table salt at all anymore.

Try Dickinson salt, and you'll discover what salt really tastes like. Visit jqdsalt.com, and on their website, use the promo code, the main thing, and you'll get a 15% discount off your order. Give it a try. Debbie, we talked about your creativity, all your creative pursuits, your your multiple gifts, your your prophetic gifting. I wonder if... And you look in the context of all that, how you would describe your calling. If someone said to you, Debbie, that's great. You you have all these tools and gifts. But what is your true calling?

Debbie Henne

[16:40]

I always knew I was called to teach. I knew I was called to, you know, have a voice that went beyond one local church body. That's just the assignment that he had for me, not that it's better or worse, you know, greater than anybody or anything else. Right? It's just the assignment he had for me, and I knew that. But when he released the vision for the discipleship community, last year, last spring, about a year and a half ago at this time of the recording, it just really... I had to pause. I'm not... I'm gonna be honest. I had to pause and be like, are you serious?

This is what you want me to do. I'm not gonna be that itinerant speaker going from church to church to church with my books and maybe some songs and speaking and blessing that church and then moving on.

Skip Lineberg

[17:34]

That would make total sense.

Debbie Henne

[17:36]

That would make sense. Right? And that was my expectation my whole life since I was seven, eight years old when God first spoke that part of my calling into my heart. So that's a long time to have that Yeah. Mindset. And I had to take a few weeks and really say, this... You and I, God, do not think see me the same. Who you think I am is not who I think I am. And the only one of us is wrong, and it's not me. So you are going to have to shift who I think I am and the identity here on this earth, you know, outside of daughter of god. Right? So that never changes.

But Right. My function and my role here on Earth, you're gonna have to really shift in my heart. And I submit to that, but I don't even know how to get there kinda thing. And so he did. It it was a process of probably at least a good month of shifting my my perception of my function and my role here from itinerant speaker to church planter, and building a whole new way, a new template for how do we reach people, how do we engage them, How do we do this faith community given all the resources out there, given that there are people that literally live in digital spaces?

Yeah. And as I've gotten in there, I can tell you, there are people you will never probably really meet out on the streets because they are in digital spaces all the time. And they will tell you, I've given up on IRL in real life life. This is my life.

Skip Lineberg

[19:24]

Wow.

Debbie Henne

[19:25]

And they spent eight, ten, twelve hours a day in there. And so there are people that we, as a church, as a faith community, will never reach if we're not willing to go in there.

Skip Lineberg

[19:38]

And They're never gonna walk into your your building.

Debbie Henne

[19:40]

Will never walk into your church. And some of them, you know, they're... They tend to be the gaming community. Right? Gamers. So they're up all night gaming. They're not going to come to Sunday morning church. They're up all night. They're they're going to bed at 05:00 in the morning, 06:00 in the morning because they're playing their games all night. But if we can go in and and start to engage with them, start to show them the love of Jesus

Skip Lineberg

[20:08]

where they are.

Debbie Henne

[20:08]

Meet them where they're at. Meet them where they're at. You... We might get some. Yeah. And we might have to get out of a Sunday morning idea. Right? Get Mhmm. We may have to be willing to step out of that, which can be uncomfortable because our lives and our culture are really set up for Sunday morning church and gathering. And I get that. I've I've been living it now for a while, the uncomfortable Friday night, Saturday night.

Skip Lineberg

[20:35]

Okay.

Debbie Henne

[20:37]

But, you know, I... If we're gonna reach people who are not going to get up at eight, nine, ten, 11:00 service time for that time, we have to be willing to let go of our comforts, of our ways of doing things in order to reach and engage with people right where they're at and then come alongside them. And maybe they'll never come to Sunday morning church. Does it really matter if they are seeing their lives transformed, if they are... They're embracing hope? And maybe they will. I'm not saying that we shouldn't encourage that. But I'm just saying, can we meet them where they're at, come alongside them, and see them have a life transformed by the hope and the freedom of Jesus?

Skip Lineberg

[21:24]

His ways are not our ways. His plans are not our plans. His ways and his plans are higher. This is a perfect example of that. God didn't allow digital places and spaces and virtual reality to happen outside his will. You know, he's in charge. He's sovereign. These things, he knew this was coming before we did. He's not surprised by it. And the fact that you're stepping into that space, is awesome.

Debbie Henne

[21:53]

That was something that kinda took a lot of for me to wrap my head around. There are talent shows in there, open mic nights, karaoke Wow. Coffee shops. So I can go to a virtual coffee shop, sit down on a comfy chair at a table with this beautiful scene, and it could be anything. We could be under the under the water. It could be an aurora borealis. It could be in the sky, you know, because it's virtual, but still a coffee shop, and have a beautiful cup of artisan coffee in my virtual hand with my little biscuits and sit around a table just like I would in real life.

But the... This person looks like maybe a bunny rabbit or a dragon or another person who knows what they look like. But there's a real person on the other side of that cartoon image, and I can hear their voice real time. And maybe that person is from Canada. Maybe they're from Germany. Maybe they're from Norway. Maybe they're from South Africa or Russia. But we can all sit at the same coffee shop at the same time in this virtual space. And it's happened three or four different continents represented at the same time in the same digital space having a great So it can be a very powerful tool.

I have two songs out that I've written. I've done... I did the vocals for on the track. I didn't do any of the instrumentation in the background. My friend Linker Sanchez, who did the production, did all of the backtracks for that. But that was another big pushback, end step of obedience, to release what God has given me to share it so it can bless and encourage other people. But it was a pushback on fear because music, has been a huge battle of fear, and it kinda still is. Still working on it. Working on how does that look for the next step. Does it look like me trying to lead worship in my core group that meets on Saturday nights?

You know? That kind of thing. Kinda wrestling through that right now, but wanting to be obedient. And I think that when we get a picture of how big god is, fear starts to look really kinda wimpy by comparison. So if we keep our focus on how big god is and how awesome god is, everything else just kinda fades.

Skip Lineberg

[24:14]

Well, your main thing was pursue the positive, and you explained it to us that we can go through life dodging negatives and and avoiding our fears. And we can also flip the script, and we can pursue things that are positive that are generous and beautiful and praiseworthy and, kind and helpful and beneficial. And that's a whole different a whole different operating system. I think you just characterized that extremely well. So your main thing, October 2022, nearly four years ago, was pursue the positive. And I just wanna ask you in the context of wisdom revisited, is that still, the main thing that's guiding your life?

Is that still the north on your compass right now, or has something else come in and either taken its place or shifted that a bit?

Debbie Henne

[25:02]

I would say it really still is. Still pursuing the positive. And as I thought about coming back on today's show and I thought, what... If we revisit that, it may be a a little bit of a updated way for today and what I've been through the last four years, as I've stepped out and taken active steps into the assignment that God has for me. So anybody who stepped out in the things that God has for them, especially if you have a a more public, assignment, you're gonna get hit. You're gonna take a lot... I'm going... A lot of hits. And some of them come through, you know, people that you thought were on your team and on your side.

And so wrestling through some of those hurts and realizing... And this is the spin off, pursue the positive. Right? So it wasn't so much about trying to get out of the offense through forgiveness. It was pursuing the positive by blessing. So the secret to getting out of offense and not allowing hurt and offense to kinda take over your mind, you ruminate and you think. Even if you're positive thinking, like, how could I... What can I do to fix this? How can I get out of this? What should I have done? You know, all those things. Just say, you know, I'm gonna bless.

I'm gonna bless. And if it looks like I see they have a bunch of bags and boxes and they're carrying them in, hey. Can I get the door for you? Doesn't mean, like

Skip Lineberg

[26:38]

Yeah.

Debbie Henne

[26:38]

You have to restore a deep relationship again. Right? And we're not saying, you know, go out for coffee with somebody that you can't trust and reveal all of your inner thoughts. Right?

Skip Lineberg

[26:49]

Right.

Debbie Henne

[26:50]

Or just saying you can have a boundary and you can bless, but bless from your heart because that will be so powerful for keeping your heart clean and clear and out of a fence. Because if we get stuck in a fence, it messes everything up. And if you even look at Jesus' example with Judas at the table, he blessed him to go and betray him. He blessed. And so, again, if we lean into blessing when it comes to offenses, we will find so much freedom that we never knew we could have.

That's beautiful. Thank you for sharing that. Debbie, I think that's a great place to leave it. Really, a powerful ending, a powerful place to, to take away and reflect on the wisdom that you shared today. Yeah. Your main thing is still stands, pursue the positive with a strong supporting approach, which is I'm gonna bless. I love that. Debbie, thanks for coming on today and sharing your wisdom, revisiting your wisdom from four years ago, adding to it, telling us telling us about the work that you're doing. This has been just a real joy. Thank you so much.

So long for now, Debbie. That goes by incredibly fast, doesn't it? Time flies when you're hacking wisdom. Thank you for listening to this wisdom conversation. Let's give a big hearty thank you to the crew of the Main Thing Podcast. These are the folks who truly keep the wisdom pipeline flowing. Audio engineer, Bob Hotchkiss, strategy adviser, Andy Malinoski, public relations and partnerships guru, Rachel Bell, social media and digital marketing expert, Chloe Lineberg, graphic designer, Emma Malinoski, and, of course, our patrons. Those generous folks who provide monthly funding support to help underwrite our cost of production.

I couldn't do it without you nor would I want to. Your feedback matters a lot. If you have a question, a suggestion, maybe an idea, or even a nomination of a future show guest, I'd love to hear from you. Email me at info@themainthingpodcast.com. Well, that's a wrap for this show. I'm your host, Skip Lineberg, signing off for now and inviting you to join us again next time for another special delivery of wisdom.
